DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural hormone synthesized by the adrenal glands from cholesterol. In medical terms, this is a 'precursor' of synthesized hormones such as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone.
Secretion peaks at about age 21, and decreases by 90% by age 75. By age forty, only half of the optimum amount is produced. Stress, severe nutritional deficiency, the abuse of sweets or alcohol, smoking, drug addiction, and anything else leading to undue stress on the body can also trigger premature aging.
DHEA acts at a number of levels, and helps neutralize some of the problems brought on by aging. It improves immune responses and increases the effectiveness of vaccinations. Lastly, it stimulates neurological function, improves memory, and protects the brain from cell degeneration. It also has a positive impact on morale, playing the role of a true anti-depressant.
It combats osteoporosis by improving mineral bone density, particularly in women. It even constitutes an alternative to hormone replacement treatments for the menopause. It significantly increases the production of sebum, thereby improving skin hydration, as well as reducing age spots. |
