Our body produces melatonin during the night by the mean of the pineal body gland at the rear of the brain. Secretion peaks at between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning. Melatonin production peaks during the teenage years and decreases with age.
Melatonin regulates our biological clock. It is a tension releaser and muscle relaxer. It induces drowsiness, increases recovery following sleep and reduces nocturnal waking, which becomes more frequent with age. It is useful for anyone with sleep disorders also increases vigilance, such as the syndrome that delays sleeping. It does not have the undesirable side effects of conventional sleeping pills; drowsiness, sleep and awakening are relieved naturally. It also helps the body to adapt to changes to the biological clock, thus enabling travellers to avoid jet lag, linked to the change in time zones.
