Our body produces melatonin during the night by the mean of the pineal body gland at the rear of the brain. Secretion peaks at between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning. Melatonin production peaks during the teenage years and decreases with age.
Melatonin regulates our biological clock. It is a tension releaser and muscle relaxer. It induces drowsiness, increases recovery following sleep and reduces nocturnal waking, which becomes more frequent with age. It is useful for anyone with sleep disorders also increases vigilance, such as the syndrome that delays sleeping (1). It does not have the undesirable side effects of conventional sleeping pills; drowsiness, sleep and awakening are relieved naturally. It also helps the body to adapt to changes to the biological clock, thus enabling travellers to avoid jet lag, linked to the change in time zones (2).
Furthermore, melatonin neutralizes free radicals and, in particular, limits the appearance of brown spots brought on by aging. For best results, melatonin cream should be applied in combination with melatonin absorbed under the tongue.
As a major antioxidant, melatonin can be useful to people undergoing gamma ray or chemotherapy cancer treatment, by restoring the immune system faster.
For relatively long-term treatment, melatonin should be administered orally rather than under the tongue, in the recommended doses, with follow-up by a physician. |
