Bee products were used by Ancient Egyptians. Their benefits have been recognised for many years! Propolis is produced by worker bees from the resins collected in the buds of certain trees (poplar, birch, willow, alder, abalone, fir, etc.). It is used to reinforce the hive as well as to defend the bees against possible attackers. As soon as an insect (for example) enters the hive, the bees wrap it in a layer of propolis. This mummifies the intruder and thus prevents decomposition and putrefaction. Honey, the sweet substance produced by bees from the nectar of flowers or the honeydew of aphids that is collected and stored in the cells of the hive, is known for its soothing properties as well as for being a source of long life! It also contains glucose oxidase, which is added by the special bees that produce this enzyme. This enzyme converts sugar into hydrogen peroxide, a well-known antiseptic. Honey also contains flavonoids (mainly pinocembrin, galangin and pinobanksin) which are known for their therapeutic properties (antiseptic, antibacterial and antioxidant). |
