Alpha-lipoic acid is a complex coenzyme that our system produces from the amino acid cysteine. Its most active physiological form is the R-form, which is 10 times more active than the S-form which is usually found on the market of food supplements, and is worth the extra cost of its production. Besides, the use of Alpha-lipoic R acid with an other amino-acid, acetyl L-carnitine, has shown impressive results in ageing symptoms prevention, according to clinical studies.
The multifunctional action of alphalipoic R-acid (d-form) itself is extremely important in a variety of health areas. Facilitating the transformation of ingested food into simple sugar and fatty acids, it is a key component of the cell's energy metabolism. It is also a very potent " universal " anti-oxidant that counteracts free radicals action throughout the cell and therefore at all levels of their formation. As alpha-lipoic R-acid rapidly converts into dihydrolipidic acid, the nervous system is particularly sensitive to its anti-oxidant action.
