| Maca (Lepidium meyenï) has been grown on the high plateaus of the Andes at an altitude of over 4,000 metres for more than 3,000 years. It is a highly valued plant among the indigenous population. Traditionally its root (tuber) has enabled the local people to withstand the extreme climatic conditions (cold, altitude etc.). Maca also has a number of medicinal properties and is therefore recommended for sexual problems both in men and women (sexual dysfunction, menstrual problems or infertility). Studies have shown that Maca increases fertility, in particular the production of spermatozoids, from day one of the treatment. It also works favourably in prostatic hypertrophy conditions. It promotes a good sex drive and improves libido. It regulates the menstrual cycle and reduces menopausal problems. Maca acts like a tonic on the whole body following the example of ginseng, which is why it is sometimes referred to as “Peruvian ginseng”. Consequently, it is also recommended for combating the weakening of the immune system, anaemia, constipation and joint pain. How does it work? The secret of its stimulating effect probably lies in its active ingredients (carboxylic acid, sulfocyanate, amino aids (arginine and histidine), fatty acids and specific compounds (macamides)). These compounds act on the central nervous system and stimulate blood circulation increasing libido and the blood supply to the sexual organs. |
