The Aztecs nicknamed it " food of the gods ". They used it for putting on weight, improving digestion and bowel movements as well as for revitalising and bringing back strength. In fact, the therapeutic use of cocoa has been known for a long time.
It contains chemical tonic substances called methylxanthines, which have psychological, cardio-stimulant, diuretic and vasodilator effects. Among these substances, theobromine plays a major role in the cardiac and respiratory field. It is actually an alkaloid that stimulates the nonstriated muscles as well as kidney functions and improves muscular performance. Theobromine also acts to accelerate the transmission of the nervous impulse and reduces response time during stimulation of peripheral nerves.
Therefore theobromine is involved in the facilitation of cardiac effort, and furthermore it also has bronchodilator properties, enabling tidal volume to be optimised, and for a long time it has been used in asthma drugs. These two functions make theobromine particularly interesting for long-distance and endurance sports, as well as mountain sports.
Finally, cocoa is not only a stimulant, but also a protector of our organism. It contains large quantities of flavonoids, which are beneficial to blood circulation and help to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The protective effect of flavonoids is due to their anti-oxidant properties and the fact that they encourage the metabolism of LDL-cholesterol. |
